“Kent Life”

2012 12 Plaque

Some of the Region members posing with our new “Kent Life” panel, which will be used in any future displays and exhibitions, such as the Kent County Show, attended by the Group.

Readers may remember that the individual pieces were carved by eight members who entered the com-petition that was announced in May 2011. Malcolm Dye, Pat Sproule, David Howard, Cliff Styles, John Little, Mike Hopper, John Pryke and David Cooper, who has since moved north . The scenes depicted are Chatham Docks, the Bishop’s Palace in Maidstone, Broadstairs Harbour, Rochester Castle, Whitsta-ble, a Thames sailing barge and the Kent White Horse.
Those members not directly involved in the project will not be aware of the luck we had with this project which was undertaken with the minimum of thought about the eventual use to which the panels were to be put. Without realising it and certainly not planning it, we finished up with eight panels which happened by pure fluke to comprise two portrait oriented panels and six landscape oriented panels. Just imagine trying to accommodate three portrait and five landscape panels!
Oh, and incidentally, before you ask, the competition was won by the Kent White Horse, carved by the editor, John Pryke, who tells us he has bought some of those “must-have” tools that he is now has to find a use for!
