The photo shows a piece of work by a French woodworker, Monsieur Yves Perrin, which I came across at a country fair in central France some 5 years ago. I was impressed with the humour of his work , which included various other animals in odd and funny situations.

They are not small figures, this ostrich is at least 18” high, probably carved in lime.
I didn’t actually meet him but when I got home I found a description of him on the Internet. Unfortunately I didn’t take a print-out at the time and now he no longer appears on the Net; perhaps he is no longer with us. As far as I can remember he came to carving .rather late in life having previously been well known in a quite different and somewhat exotic field. If memory serves me correctly I think he made tapestries in silk. A talented guy!
Perhaps future Newsletters can show some of the pictures I have of his other work? Anyway, his humorous approach to carving set me thinking and so I decided that
I would have a go…
The first two of these photos show side and front views of “Olly” as I have come to know him. The third photograph shows a slight modification undertaken by a grandchild. Regretfully I have to admit that Olly probably makes a far better elephant at this stage of his development!
